Wine Glass Views of Luxembourg's Vianden Castle

Updated: Oct 15, 2018

Crowns, gowns, royals and riches may have filled the castle halls, yet it was the wine-filled glasses that appeared to be most adored by royalty. Throughout the centuries, there has been plenty of evidence to suggest this deep appreciation for wine , especially when considering the number of paintings and fire-side stories that in some way reference wine being indulged by kings, queens and their distinguished guests.

As my husband and I journeyed through Luxembourg, I knew I needed to find a spot for a wine glass, castle photo. For a country that is nearly the size of Rhode Island, the beauty is beyond impressive!  From the countryside along the Moselle River (where the wine valley lies) to Luxembourg City with its rolling hills and fortified surroundings and onward North to the picturesque, Vianden Castle, there is no wrong turn when touring around this country.

Speaking of the Vianden Castle being so picture perfect, it was the precise location I sought after in order to capture the beauty of Luxembourg through the wine glass.  This national gem was first built from the 11th to 14th centuries, but eventually crumbled away in 1820 when King William I of Holland decided to sell it "piece by piece."  However, thanks to the family of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, it was reconstructed to its orinigal beauty in 1977 (*sigh of relief!*), and I, along with the over 100,000 visitors each year, were able to get a taste of the Medieval Times.
